It’s all but impossible to discuss African-American culture or America’s musical heritage without talking about Gospel Music. Just as the church was an integral part of the African-American community from the time slaves were first brought to the colonies, music played a crucial role in their spiritual experience from the beginning, and as various forms of African and rural music coalesced into gospel, gospel in turn became the foundation that later spawned jazz, blues, soul and even rap. And gospel music became the stepping-stone into the spotlight for many of music most influential artists, who in turn helped bring new ideas into the gospel sound, keeping it fresh and innovative. Filmmaker Don McGlynn, who specializes in documentaries about American music, chronicles the history of African-American gospel music in the film REJOICE AND SHOUT, which reveals the true story of this powerful and influential musical form and the people who helped to make it great. REJOICE AND SHOUT received its world premiere at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival.

SOFT FOR DIGGING and MIMIC: SENTINEL director J.T. Petty takes a break from scaring audiences to explore the connection between voyeurism and the horror genre in a documentary that seeks to scrutinize the psychological underpinnings of the fright films by speaking with both the people who make them and the scholars who study them. In addition to delving into such issues as objectivity/subjectivity, audience sympathy, and what the need to be scared says about the viewer, Petty backs up his theory about voyeurism’s connection to horror by exploring the case of a man who was caught obsessively capturing video footage of his neighbors.

The only thing preventing Dr. Heiter’s from carrying out his experiment is a lack of human subjects. Art & Copy

The advertising industry in America exists in a paradox–while it’s all but impossible to go a day without being exposed to the work of leading figures in the advertising business, very little is known about the people behind the ads and the process by which they’re created. Filmmaker Doug Pray offers a rare look inside the business of advertising in the documentary ART & COPY, in which he profiles a number of the most respected men and women in the ad game as they talk about their work, their motivations, and their views on the creative process. Pray’s interview subjects include Lee Clow, who created memorable television spots for Apple’s Macintosh computer and later their iPod MP3 player; Rich Silverstein and Jeff Goodby, who gave new life to the dairy industry with the “Got Milk?” campaign; Hal Riney, who helped put Ronald Reagan in the White House with his “Morning in America” TV spot; George Lois, who remade popular culture by coining the slogan “I Want My MTV”; and Mary Wells, the first woman to run a major ad agency and the creator of the “I (heart) New York” campaign. Sponsored in part by the One Club, an organization dedicated to excellence in advertising, ART & COPY received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
